Dragon Half

Concluding our rampage through the fantasy genre is Dragon Half.  How similar is it to Evangelion? We shall count the ways.

1. Both Princess Vina and Asuka must work past the secret shame of their mothers

Perch: Except in Dragon Half it’s played up for comedy and in Evangelion its played up for the tears of unborn babies.

2. Shinji has two background friends who drive certain plot points.  Mink has two background friends that encourage her to get around to her plot point.

Perch: Shinji’s friends are encouraging him to grow a spine.  Mink’s friends are trying to encourage her to lose a tail.

Kinotu: Well Shinji’s is already tucked so there was no need.

3. Dick Saucer is beloved by all the women, Misato is beloved by all the boys.

Perch: We only added this point to make dick jokes.

Kinotu: I don’t know what you’re talking about, Dick Sausage’s character is a probing and invasive element in this story.  He comes in and out at all the right times.

Perch: There’s certainly no end to the masturbation considering his theme song is just “Dick Saucer” crooned lounge-lizard style.

Kinotu: Dick Saucy Saucer thought long and hard about how best to epitomize his girthy tale in song.

Perch: All right, that’s enough.

Kinotu: Sorry, I’ll be good. Penis. Sorry.

4. Somehow we thought the Dick Saucer jokes would be enough to carry us through this list.  In Evangelion they thought the line – “I musn’t run away” would carry the whole show.

5. Dug Finn was meant to be the main the antagonist in Dragon Half.  Seele was supposed to have a point in Evangelion.

Kinotu: Wait, did they cut all of Seele’s parts out of the first episode too?

Perch: That would make so much more sense.

6. In Evangelion, Shinji hates his dad because he is an unmitigated bastard.  In Dragon Half, Mink hates her dad because he doesn’t like her pop star.

Perch: And really what teenage girl hasn’t hated her dad for not liking her favorite idol.

Kinotu: Though I think half of Shinji’s problems would have been cured if Gendou had tried half as hard as Rouce did in getting his kid to like him.

Perch: Rouce was trying to get Mink to like him? I thought he was just a perv trying to hit on her best friend.

Kinotu: What, he can’t be both?

If you haven’t seen Dragon Half, it’s a pretty adorable two-episode OVA about a young pink-haired girl who happens to be a half dragon in love with a dragon slayer/pop idol. Rivals, friends and ridiculous plot points ensue.

Kinotu: I’m pretty sure I’ve still got some Dick Saucer jokes.

Perch: I was disappointed it was only two episodes long.  It had a lot of fun characters, but not enough mechs.

Kinotu: There was a robot bird in there, we probably could have made that a point.

In closing we give this show four pen-pens.  It almost slipped past our Evangelion radar, and then Damaramu showed up.

Kinotu: With a squirt-gun finger.  Which should have been standard issue on an Eva unit.
